Marea Atkinson

Marea Atkinson is an artist working in Adelaide South Australia. She lives on the traditional lands of the Kaurna People.  She received a Master of Fine Art Degree from Cranbrook Academy of Art, MI, USA. With additional study in Australia, Canada, Spain, the Philippines and residencies in Canada and Italy.  Marea taught at the University of South Australia and was Studio Head of Printmaking in the School of Art Architecture and Design.
Her research interests include the associations between the celestial and the terrestrial, contemporary indigenous printmaking and astronomy, scientific astronomy prints.  The musings of Isaac Newton on light and iridescent surfaces, with further experimentation in sound, spoken word and music in reference to outer space. She has participated in many INSAP conferences, exhibited at UNESCO in Paris, a large-scale illumination on the Jodrell Bank Telescope, UK, Milan International Photo Festival, Italy, The Starlight Initiative in Canary Islands Spain, and New Zealand, to protect the night sky for scientific, cultural and environmental knowledge and the right to observe the stars. Marea has received numerous awards, with specific art science awards from the Italian Art Association, University of Manchester UK, University of Waterloo, Canada, and the Canadian Association of Physicists. Her work is held in national and international collections which include, Brooklyn Museum, NY, USA, National Gallery of Australia, ACT, Detroit Institute of Art, MI, USA, and Jodrell Bank Observatory, UK.
