At the beginning of July, every year since 2004, the Department of Music at the Ionian University has hosted a week-long seminar on a topic related to the music of ancient Greece.

In 2010 we shall be examining the main passages concerned with music in Plato’s Laws. The morning sessions are devoted to the the main passages concerned with music in Plato’s Laws; discussions are led by Dr Eleonora Rocconi (Pavia), Professor Andrew Barker (Birmingham) and Professor Egert Pöhlmann (Erlangen). The afternoons are free. In the evenings from Monday to Saturday there is a programme of lectures (one or two each evening) on a range of topics to do with ancient Greek music, not necessarily ones connected with the themes of the morning seminars. Some of the lectures are given by established academics, others by research students. Visiting speakers in 2010 are expected to include Professor Lydia Goehr (Columbia), Dr Barbara Kowalzig (London), Dr Stelios Psaroudakis (Athens), Dr Christos Terzis (Athens) and Dr Stefan Hagel (Vienna).

The official language of the seminars is English.

The fee for attendance at the week of seminars and lectures is 200 euros. Students attending can stay in the University’s dormitories, if they wish, at a cost of 10 euros per night.
